Another Vision-Riders scoop...I almost didn't want to type these words for fear it would not be true, but...

The MBW LED Tail Light AND Front directionals are now in production

I've received these words directly from MBW:

...this ain't vaporware , but our initial production run has long been spoken for. With the amount of time/labor required to assembly these ... it's gonna take us a while to catch up with everyone that wants one, but it's fantasy NO MORE!"

"Our front and rear LED turn signals for the Victory VISION will be available in a variety of configurations that will allow the end user to choose what lense color (Euro clear or stock amber front, and Euro clear or stock red rear) in addition to having either hyper white or amber running lights in the front. Flash patterns will be user-selectable for the ultimate in individual customization.

You can check out the MBW Vision page:
http://www.mbwmotorcycle.com/products/vision.html

Some Details:
  • The different light patterns are user selectable
  • Made in America by Americans
  • Hand-assembled one unit at a time
  • Running lights are the outline of LEDs on the tail light, and the bottom row of LEDs on the front directionals.
  • Will be available in different configurations based on lens color
  • The video shows the rear lights with red lenses and clear lenses on the front lights (in case you were wondering). The still photo below show a clear rear lens.
  • MBW is planning on selling these direct retail off their site at some point, but for now our normal dealers and distributors, including Radiantz will have them for sale.
  • They're turn key plug and play units.
  • Pricing TBA

And some videos:

Those are pretty neat, but I wish they would have shown one more view and that was with a turn signal flashing and the brakes on.

I would need to see them on a bike in person.

My first thought was I was watching the casino billboards in Las Vegas. Almost over the top. Was waiting for it to start flashing 10X odds or $1.29 Ham & Eggs.

Like I said, I want to see them in person on a bike.

The announcement is pretty vague...the initlal production run has long been spoken for? When, what and how many units? Its already been noted that no release date is available, when it becomes available, what is the expected eta on their second run. There is no mention regarding pre-orders. Companies always have a revenue release and GA/General Availability. Still too many red flags....it may not be vaporware but it sounds like its still in the jello stage?

Its also interesting that MBW is making a reactionary response due to recent customer inquiries vs being proactive in letting folks know when and at what price point.

Sounds like the same old stuff they've been posting for the past 3 years. At this point, even if I had the money, I wouldn't buy a set. If they've had all these problems so far (with basically zero communication), what makes anyone think warranty issues would ever be taken care of? What if you have problems with the installation? Just because MBW as a company has been around for a while, that doesn't mean they'll stand behind their product. GIVE me a set and I'd think about it. Try to SELL me a set and I'll do with the stock lights.

Contructive criticism for MBW. The flash rate is WAY too fast to be effective. About 1/2 that would be better.

They still look very cool ( I really like the idea ) but videos mean nothing these days, especially when different variations of it ( the video ) have been around for three years with no product to sell. Show up at Daytona Bike Week, Sturgis, Laughlin and Biketoberfest to show off your stuff. Have enough to sell and install. MBW may have missed the "window" for the "I gotta have those things" feelings..............I'd have to see them in person to put down the big $$$$$ they're gonna want for this product or be number 100 after rave reviews..........

except for the DIY ExLED modules, there certainly isn't any competition for these. If they can really come out with a plug n play product, even with the delays, they'll still sell a bunch.

I wouldn't be so sure about that, okie. Because of their lack of product and lack of communication, there are quite a few that are pretty skeptical about both the actual product and the possible warranty issues. Their track record sucks. Even if I had a spare $1000 (which I don't), I wouldn't feel comfortable buying them. Now, if someone like Witchdoctors or HMD were to market them, I might reconsider (again, if I had the money) only because of their stellar reputations. If there was a problem, they would take care of it even if MBW didn't. I honestly think the only way they'll ever sell any is to remarket them. (All this is assuming they're not lying about the product again.)

I'm not saying there will be a line waiting to crash down the doors but there's a bunch of newer Vision owners everyday, not just those of us that have been waiting on these things for a couple years. Don't you remember how pumped everyone was when this surfaced way back? I just feel that this time, working with Radiantz, this will be a quality product, and if that's true, I still think they'll be very popular, especially for owners that weren't waiting on them when they were first announced and ended up disgruntled. Time will (or won't, lol) tell.

They will never market them to the general public. Cease holding your breath over the availability of them. You have a better chance of dying and being buried; rather than seeing these lights available.

It was so long ago that I stumbled across the second or third thread on them after I started investigating a possible Victory buy. I have owned my Vision since Mid-May so you figure it out. Any new owner who takes the time to research will find threads like this and probably get a feel for how long they have been nothing but vaporware. Add in the extreme cost and I doubt many will ever sell without both a sample for people to actually see in person and a vendor that people trust.

IMHO, these lights may never make it to market since they're a safety features on a motorcycle, I'm guessing that they must be tested and certified in every state. It may be too bright and blinding or even a distraction in some states and really, how many Visions do you think are on the road? I was reading something last year that it took Victory 15 years to sell 200,000 motorcycles. The good thing was, it took the first 10 years to sell the first 100k, and only 5 years to sell the 2nd 100k (probably because of the Vision, XC, and XCT). Anybody else know about the number of Victorys on the road or annual sales numbers?

oh believe me.. i said the same thing years ago..... PA has some laws related to how far a brake light can be from a turn signal when in use... how do i know? cause I Failed inspection a few years ago on one of my other motorcycles.. so i learned real quick.. just because someone sells something for your motorcycle doesnt mean it is legal.... btw im talking about my old lights not these...

The separation issue is a federal law. You got hit because your state actually does inspections based on the law. In many places, like me in Illinois, I would need to get pulled over either for a major issue or for a much more obvious equipment problem before the subject would even come up. They seem to let things be without comment as long as you don't do anything unsafe here. State to state variations definitely come into play for mods that are technically illegal under federal law. An example is exhaust noise. Any exhaust that is noisier than bone stock is illegal under federal law but few places are even close to that strict. The federal law is why almost all after market exhausts are marked for off road use only.

I rarely see other visions during the riding year. I may see 30 in Daytona during Bike Week and 20 during Biketoberfest. If and when I see one with these lights installed I'll make it a point to talk to the owner. Till then it just as someone else said "vaporware". I do appreciate you bringing it to our attention though Jeff..........

In Northern California, outside of my riding group and any Victory events or dealerships, I've only seen a handful of Visions, even when I'm driving, I don't see them around. So when I'm riding, I get the strangest looks and lots of thumbs up. It's like riding a custom bike!

Well first of all these aren't the same as the first series. The fronts are damn cool, but the rear ones are just weird looking when not blinking. Also MBW is partnering with Radiantz LED's on these. So that may add some validity that we could see these actually hit the market.

Re-read their website. Missed the part where they state both front and rear will be in Euro Clear and regular Amber/Red configurations. The clear is shown on their website, thus the weird look. Really want to see the rear lights in red. If Radiantz is making these, then we should see them finally get to market.

Jim

PS - Just checked and Radiantz is showing these on their youtube site.

Many years ago when I belonged to a kawasaki group, we had a few guys in our group with loud pipes. We all road down to lake lure, n.c. . These guys never had issues at home (back then) with the volume of their exhausts, that was until we traveled into someone else's back yard. Then we (they) ran into major issues where we were staying for the ralley.. we were there for a week and they were misable because the police were waiting for "this breaking of their law/rule". I remember they had to TRY and drive through town in like 1-2 gears higher to try and decrease the exhaust volume.. I know it's not the same as lights but. What passes in one state might not when your traveling. Silly example. My idiot friend who thinks nothing applies to him.. pa has no helmet law. So we ride into wv. Well they do have a helmet law. So guess what happens. Yep.. He tell the officer, we'll my state doesn't have a helmet so I don't own one.. The cop said. I don't care about your state. Your in my state! Boom! Nailed his arrogant ass.. lol

For all the naysayers, MBW is now selling them online directly from their website. You can choose a retrofit kit (where you disassemble the lights) or a complete swap.

I see they require a 'Flasher Module' (extra $60) to work with the cruise control. I wonder if it is just a set of resistors and heat sinks, or does it electronically fool the ECU?

Don't care for the look of MBW's outer border LED's on the tail lights. Amber lower borders led's on the front look kinda cool. What's up with the their flash rate? Too damn fast. You would think they would take the time to adjust it down to match the vision's flash rate for the videos. I'm liking the exLED layout and flash rate better plus it's $240 cheaper. Waiting for a reviews on both like everyone else.....

The exLED website says you have to:

"to weatherproof included case as well as shield it from RF signals -and- Computer modules must be positioned as far away from HID ballasts as possible"

How does one "shield" the "included case" from RF signals? I'm fine with everything else...

it is not resistors and heat sinks. We wanted to come up with a solution that will not make heat. We know that this is a high value product and resistors would have work but heat is bad for LEDs. So we figured out how the stock flasher was made and we made our own to work with LEDs. We did have the LEDs boards ready in November but we wanted to have a flasher to ship with the LEDs. So, we held the product for a total solution.

I'm curious about that too. I have a CB radio and use it a lot. What's 4 watts of RF energy in close proximity to these things going to do?

The other question is will the lights cause RF interference with the CB? As you know, CBs operate using AM, and pick up electrical RF interference.

Just did a test with our new LED light with the HID ballasts. There is no need for a shield from our electronics.

i see the turning signals can be programmed for different rates of flashing. is there any programming for when the brakes are applied? example.. brake light on, brake light on with 3 flash before staying on etc

yes we have 3 different brake modes. we show it in our video
http://youtu.be/oD92H6o0FiU?t=58s

oh when i watched that video i misunderstood what i was watching.. i should of read it more closely. i thought i was watching of demo of possible turn signal options. (flashes) i didnt know that was for the brakes.. i think i might have thought that because of only one side doing the flashing in the video..

I'll just c/p my post from the VMC.

Not sure I'm digging the adjustment method. Adjusting them externally with a magnet is "cool" but I can think of a few things you could accidently get too close to the lights and change just one (or at least put it in "change" mode) without the riders knowledge. (Or maybe not.) I also don't see any mention of a warranty. The fact that they're being marketed by Radianz is a plus. I hope Radianz knows what they're doing. If MBW continues their previous "service and communication" (or lack thereof), it will hurt Radianz' good reputation.

I DO like the DIY price. $415 is something I might eventually be able to afford. Fortunately, I wouldn't be able to even think about spending the money for a while. That means I'll get to see if anyone actually gets their lights, if the quality is any good and if the warranty is honored. I still have some serious doubts about MBW but I'm willing to keep an open mind.

Radiantz,
For those of us ready to do the DIY kit, could you post or attach directions on splitting the rear lenses? A link even?
I'd like this information to decide which way I want to go on the purchase.
THanks

Radiantz,
I notice the rears do not have a reflective backround behind the LEDs. Would there be any reason I couldn't add retro-reflective stickers between the LEDs to make it more in-line with DOT requirements?

I've been in the process of doing the DIY tail light mod on my 2008 Vision and have come to find that the flasher unit is NOT plug and play. The 2008s use a different size plug for the stock flasher unit that does not work with the MBW unit. That being said, they are working with me on a fix. I'll keep you posted on the results.

Got the rears installed over the weekend. It's like having a new bike all over. I don't know how many times I've walked out to the garage just to turn the lights on and look at them.

In the box -

Very well packaged. Looks like something you would buy in a glass case at the dealer.

It even came with a key fob, drink koozy and kickstand rest.

The connections look just like a 3157 bulb, except there are only two per side.

The only thing I have done that is different, was to add retro-reflective tape in between the LEDs.
I contacted MBW prior and they said that was fine as long as they weren't metal, which could possibly short it out.
I checked with an ohm meter to make sure they were non-conductive, and as an added measure, did not get close to any contact points.

You can see the difference, and that is just my phones LED flash.
DOT requires all vehicles have a red reflective surface to the rear. Most vehicles it is built into the tail-lights. Euro-style have the reflectors on the bumpers.
Our lenses were originally somewhat reflective, but they also had a reflector mounted to the license plate frame.
I took off the license plate frame reflector, and now don't have the lens mirrors reflecting back headlights either, so I felt this was a good solution.

I'm not going to add any pic or video of the lens splitting. The ones on here a great already.
I did take about an hour splitting them, by heating them up in the oven @ <200 and using wd40, repeating the process whenever they cooled down.
A torx wrench worked the best for getting the old silicone out of the channels, along with more heat.

The install took a little longer than normal than average. I was already running LEDs along with a "Back-Off" brakelight controller. This and all the load equalizers had to come off. The new blinker controller replaces the OEM one under the radio panel.

Just unplug the old, and plug in the new. A least there was no problem with the 2010 version.

Once installed, the bike looks like it was designed to be that way. I really like the way the running lights outline the lenses. Not too bright or overbearing, but very noticeable.

Programming the lights is straight-forward, but tedious. Each light gets programmed separate and matching the programs takes time. The programming mode rotates thru each style showing the pattern once. Some of the patterns look similar when only seen once, so it's best to find a unique pattern, then count off the patterns till the one you want. I recommend setting the speed first with an easy pattern, then change to the pattern you want.

Mode 1 - blinker pattern (5 patterns - 3 look similar)
Mode 2 - blinker speed ( 6 speeds - all very close)
Mode 3 - Brake pattern (3)

Easiest way to check that your speeds are the same is to use the hazards after your out of the program mode. If they stay together, you're good. I did notice that they will glitch after a while causing one to reset and mess up the sequencing.

The brake patterns are very stunning, the video does not do it justice, especially the strobe mode. You can easily be mistaken for a LEO. The only thing I wish they would have done, would have been to let you set the number of strobes before it went solid. Three times seems to be way to many. Once for the strobe, or twice for the off/on would have been perfect.

The turn signal module controls the speed just fine with all my old load managers gone. Even if you don't buy MBW LEDs, get the turn signal module if your using other LEDs in place of the incandescent bulbs.

I will try and get some video up when it stops raining. I have not checked the cruise control yet or if the new blinker module has the same canceling features. I will let you know if any of this is abnormal.

Any video requests, let me know.

Darrell

Has anyone tried the tinted lenses with the LEDs? Also has anyone had any problems with their MBW led kits yet?
I had the vision mod sequencers and I like the look but they keep dying on me really thinking about the mbw setup but with tinted lenses. I've had all of the squencers quit at least once and just hate to jump on the mbw units until they have been out awhile.

Any resolution on the flasher module connection for the 2008? I just purchased a front/back set from MBW and saw your post on the flasher module not being a " plug and play" with the stock module connector.

For the 2008 VV you do not need to order the flasher unit! I questioned MBW about that as I also seen the discussion and was informed that the flasher unit in the '08 is better and does not need to be changed. All that is required is the lights. The instructions provided in the box are very detailed and I had no problem with this DIY kit.

Just finished the mod on my bike and the lights are fantastic. None of the videos do the lights justice, they really need to be seen in person.

Just finished installing my DIY set. Glad I went this way. Now I know my Vision more intimately . The front is more involved because there are more parts to remove to get the housings off. The rears were a piece of cake by comparison. A good selection of exacto blades is helpfull . There is one shaped like a putty knife that was very usefull for separating the housings.
As stated earlier they are more impressive live than on video.

question. IF I just do the rear's on an 08. I take from reading this that no flasher unit is needed for the 08, however without doing the fronts does that present a flash rate problem? or any other problems? my fronts are painted over except for a small custom shape for the turn signal. No leds needed

If you add any LEDs to the bike a flasher unit is normally required to stabilise the system but on your 08 you wont need one. I have done the fronts only naand not the rears (in the UK red indicators are illegal) I have a new flasher unit and there is no flasher rate problem. The new flasher unit is a straight swop (plug and play) but as stated the 08 doesn't need one

Thanks jv.

So the outer border LEDs are the running lights. The inner LEDs on either side sequence as either turn signal is activated. Only one side is on solid when the brakes are applied and either turn signal is activated. Got it!

Once the parts back in stock, I will be doing this mod. I have already removed the light housings and split the lenses. I spent a lot of time removing the old siilcone in the housings, but watched the youtube video and he just puts a bead on top of the old stuff. I thought that silicone didn't stick to the old stuff. For those that did this mod, did you remove the old silicone?

I made my own led tail lights. To answer your questions. Yes mine chase in turn signal mode, and in flasher mode. The brake mode they BLINK FULL BRIGHT from very rapid to a slow steady to just on. Ref the silicone. I removed "as much as I could" on several tail light sections. After putting on new silicone you will be fine. It's not necessary to remove every last drop of the old. As much as possible is good enuff
