Posts: 48 huntington In. | On my ride in to work yesterday morning I hit a very large dog. It was dark out so I did not get a very good look at it. It was big and black with a head the size of a basketball. Came out from between parked cars. I hit it's head and shoulder with the right side. I was only going between 25 and 30 mph. The bike took the impact well, I didn't even feel it. Only heard the sound of cracking plastic and the dog yelp. I was lucky the bike did not go down. The Vision on the other was not so lucky, she is going to need a new front fender, right lower faring and the front trim minimum. Looking back I'm glad I was not on my old Shadow that head would have hit my leg, possibly breaking it. I did need to change shorts though.

He's not saying how the bike faired in comparison, he's saying how HE faired in comparison.
The injury of the dog is sad no matter, but I think the point was that rider protection is better on the Vision. |

He was far enough ahead to safely avoid him. You did the right thing by riding through the dog even though you most likely were to surprised to do anything but that. You will always fare better riding through vs. slamming on the brakes.
Now go get the bike fixed and ride!
I like animals but my guess is the dog probably survived or the owner had to have him put down. I blame the owner not the dog. |

As to how the dog fared trying to find out. First thing I did once stopped was to go check the dog, but it was gone. It really bothers me to know that there are people wondering who could have done this to there dog and why. Going to send letter to the editor in local paper tonight after work. |

Glad you are ok and it's great that you are making such an effort to find dog owners. |

The way things are today you'll probably end up sued by some welfare case for vet bills and emotional distress [in soft voice I hear, did that sound harsh?]. The trim piece around the front cost $1000 and depending on color could take months to get (I know, I just went through it). |

That's exactly what I was thinking.
And, having once hit a full grown St. Bernard that jumped out in front of my bike, I wouldn't be too worried about the damned dog. The one that I hit broadside was seen chasing cars again the next day. My repair bills were over $2000. Fender, footpeg, oil cooler (Sport Cruiser).

Posts: 48 huntington In. | Yes insurance covered it. Dealer already has the check. Now for the bad new, the new front fender is on back order. Dealer said it could take a month to get it. Not trying to start another Harley vs Vic discussion, but the adjuster told me I was lucky I wasn't riding a Harley. He said painted parts take 12 weeks to get. |

Posts: 804 Perry Hall, MD | Sounds like same quote I had for damage from deer strike. Found used grill on ebay for $45 (one side) and was lucky enough that fender appeared to be dented but did not crack. Turned out that once the grill was removed the fender went back to the original shape.

Jeeze that sounds like a lot of cash for that fixup. That much should cover vet bills too. |
