Posts: 28 Hendersonville, NC | Ok I was wondering what everyone gets mileage wise on a tank of fuel, my computations are not computing right, 6 gallon tank at 40 mpg = 240 miles. I was averaging all day 45 - 46 mpg but fuel light came on at 172 miles according to trip meter and it was reset when I fueled up. does it get better with time , do I possibly have something wrong. |

Posts: 599 New Mexico | I think mine is pretty close, but it is definitely not 100% accurate. Comes on around 180-200, with the range indicating I have about 40 miles left. If I fill up right then I will put in 5 gal, meaning approx. 1 gal/40 miles give or take.
I don't recall it being better or worse with time.
Today took a ride and was getting about 48mpg @ 70mph.
Increased speed to 85mph and mpg dropped to 42.
At 105mph was just TOO MUCH FUN to care!

Posts: 1632 Jasper, MO | Mine's a 2008 model. The low fuel light usually comes on at about 180 to 200 miles, depending on the riding conditions and resulting fuel economy. On my bike, it comes on with 1 1/2 gallons left in the tank. The fuel computer is optimistic, and reads 3 to 5 MPG more optimistic than real world fuel economy (checked by hand). It also says I have about a 40 mile range left when the low fuel light comes on, but in reality I can go about 60 miles. I've checked that on purpose by intentionally running the bike dry just to see--so I would know (spare gallon of gas in the trunk). Bottom line---I know I can go about another 60 miles when the low fuel light pops on.
If yours acts like mine and the low fuel light came on at 172 miles, you were actually getting about 38 or 39 MPG and had a real range of about 232 miles.
The trip computer on my bike isn't very honest. I've learned to subtract about 5 MPG from whatever it says-- to be safe. Checking the fuel economy by hand confirms that. I've also learned to find a gas station within 50 miles or so after the low fuel light comes on.
My real world fuel economy has ranged all the way from 38 MPG to 52 MPG, checked by dividing the actual gallons used by the miles ridden. The trip meter has been checked with a GPS and is surprisingly accurate--nearly dead-on, but the fuel economy meter is hopelessly optimistic.

Posts: 573 Central Illinois | With normal riding which includes some highway and some in town riding, I average about 40 MPG real mileage. The bike's mileage estimate is very optimistic. When I go out on the road and rack up lots of highway miles I get 43 to 44 MPG tank after tank. |

Posts: 466 Grand Cane, LA | Hey rdbudd, it's a very bad idea to run your tank dry on these bikes as the fuel is what keeps the pump cool. Early fuel pump failure is eminent even doing this just one time, hence the reason for the low fuel warning light. Several people have found this out the hard way. |

| On a recent trip from Connecticut to the Dragon, riding at 75MPH, almost all freeway. The bike's readout said 44MPG but the GPS and the pump's honest calculation came out to 49MPG. I like it!

Next time use your phone and do the math |

Posts: 1229 Rancho Cucamonga, CA | Since I put in cams and a PCV, my light always comes on at 170-180 miles with exactly 1 gallon left in the tank. So I'm only getting 34-36mpg. Before it would always be 190-200 or 38-40 mpg. Most of my riding is superslab @ 80-85 mph. My best when stock, was 264 miles (43mpg)on a tank. That was mostly mountain riding. Although I'm not getting as good of gas mileage, the bike does not run nearly as hot either. I have played with the PCV map, and could get it back to 40mpg without any noticeable loss of power, but it ran hot again.
I will sacrifice a little fuel to extend the life of my valves.
I have also noticed a drop in the winter by about 2 mpg due to a different blend of gas, more use of the lower deflectors and running the windshield a little higher.
The onboard computer was always over liberal by about 4 mpg. With the PCV, it is now off by about 9 mpg.

| Johnnyvision, no, my valves are fine. I get 49MPG because I'm running the overdrive pulley as well as a 68 tooth Sportster rear pulley. I'm turning 2,500 RPM @ 70 MPH. Other than the thrush mods to my exhaust, the engine is totally stock. I do the math. |
