Posts: 9 Nevada City, CA | Hi all,
I had an odd thing happen yesterday. I was low on fuel, but just into the red zone. The computer claimed I could go another 55 miles. I was getting the Low Fuel message while on the kickstand, but not when upright. I wasn't able to get the bike started on the kick stand. I stood it up and it started. I put it back on the kick stand and it died after about 5 seconds. It ran fine to the gas station. I was able to put about 5 gallons of gas in it.
Is this expected behavior? I'd hate to have the bike die on me if I"m on a long sweeper of a turn with low fuel!
The bike is a 2012 Vision.

Posts: 1308 Sand Rock, AL United States | the gas drains into the low side tank when on the stand , away from the intake so it will starve the injection system at a certain fuel level. I have come to follow Varyders rule of not letting it get below 1/4 tank. I never crank mine on the stand anymore. It ticked one cold morning for a few revolutions and I read that some bikes aren't to be started on the stand because of insufficient lubricating so , just to be safe, I always start the Vision after I have righted the bike. |

Posts: 1632 Jasper, MO | As has been said already, the pump and gauge are in the right side tank, so the gas does drain away from them when the bike is motionless on the side stand. That said, I've run mine low enough that it died when I stopped at a station for gas and put it on the side stand, but it ran fine up 'till that point even through the curves of the Ozarks. I would imagine that centrifugal force keeps the gas from leaving the right side tank when in left hand sweepers. I put 5.9 gallons in that time. It ran until I leaned it over onto the stand before shutting it off.

Posts: 9 Nevada City, CA | Thanks, guys! It's good to know its not a problem with my bike. It's also reassuring to know that it doesn't starve for fuel when underway. |

I've found that if there is one gallon or less left in the tank the bike won't start or continue running when on the side stand.
As to starving your motor of gas while on long left handed sweepers, maybe.
That hasn't happened to me yet in over 45,000 miles. |

I run my tank down to 5.5 & 5.7 fillup all the time. |

I agree.I've put as much as 6.07 gallons into Scream when I ran out of gas pulling into the station and it never cut our on me while doing any turns getting there. But I'm not going to definitively state that it can't happen. When I'm going to spend the day riding the twisties, i try to keep the fuel gauge over 1/4 full. I've had Scream stall on me (3 times before I reached 10,000 miles and none since) at low speeds and the rear wheel locks up really fast. |
