We're planning to ride from Mt Rainier National Park to Mt St Helens in early August. I understand the the route in on the east side of Mt St Helens is fun and twisty, while the route in on the west side of Mt St Helens is much more relaxed. I've heard that the east route's pavement is full of potholes, and that detracts a bit from enjoying the twisties.

Have any of you ridden this eastern route this season yet, or know if the degraded pavement issue is still there, or has it been recently repaved? I'm trying to finalize my route each day soon, so any input you have regarding a preferred route would be appreciated.

Haven't had a chance to go up this year, but I know a guy that lives in the area. I'll try and get some current info and post it.

In the meantime, the link below has a couple of good videos from last year that will give you an idea of the ride.

Look for "Windy Ridge", the east of St. Helens, and "Jonston Ridge", the west side.
