i arose to 32 degrees this morn. no rain in sight. this would be my coldest ride yet. it is 530 am. i got bundled up best i could[i really need to get a cold weather suit] i seemed to be getting a lot of 'impressive looks' so i thot. when i got to work[22 miles away] i had left my saddle bag open! lol good thing nothing was in it. last time i left it open, my m/c cover was hanging out waving like a flag. i hate it when that happens lol

I ride all winter at 5 degrees or 9 degrees - that kind of cold. Don't be a wuss!

I prefer it to be above 32 so I know the frost on some of the roads, bridges, etc is gone but I don't have any problems starting out in the 20s. You have to dress accordingly, of course. You need to go out when it's no more than 31 just so you can officially pop your below-freezing cherry.

32 degrees is so goddamned hot - I can't even think about the bike. I get in the car and crank the A/C. When it's in the 20's - that's perfect.

As it rarely gets into the 20's here I can't say I've ridden in the single digits, the triple digits are another matter.

The Vision is the "warmest" bike I have ever had. Best wind management, heated seats and grips! I have heated gear but only will use it if I have to ride more than an hour below freezing which doesn't happen much anymore. I moved from Minnesota to South Carolina because I hate being cold. I have been good in my Aerostich with a fleece jacket down to the mid-teens on my other bikes. I am sure the Vision will be even better!

You guys should have caught on with my first comment!

Did you know that the U.S.A. is the ONLY country in the world using Fahrenheit (maybe a couple of protectorates as well) ?

Also using feet and miles? 1 inch=3 barleycorns, 12 inches = 1 foot, 5280 feet = 1 mile. BRILLIANT !!!

And everything you make has to be converted to metric anyway, if you want to sell it outside of the U.S. ?

Like my metric Vision ?

Try maintaining (back in the day) one of the half and half SAE/Metric cars built by Ford and GM. Go work on a ROLLS MERLIN which is a gathering point for every weird type of fastener this side of crazy, B.S. Whitworth, SAE, and there's a wide difference between 5/8 British Standard and 5/8 SAE in addition to what the $NAPOFF guy get$ for B.S. wrenche$

The US should drop the inch system and adopt metric as our standard. The rest of the world should speak english. I think that would be a fair trade.

I am far from a brillant man, especially reading. But metric & math have always seamed logical
to me. I don't understand why the change to metric would be difficult here?

Thank God this board told me I could use a 5/8 Hex socket to remove my front 16mm axle !!
5/8" = .0625" = 15.875mm
My original tires with 18,330 miles are officially off the bike. Rear had two tiny spots where you could
see the steel belts.

Actually, Fahrenheit is more accurate than Celsius simply due to the smaller unit of measurement. So, Don, what else would you change here in America if you didn't have to bow to the Royal Monarchy? Do you prefer a frosty cold 16 oz. adult beverage or a pint, lol?! I prefer a yard of beer, but that's not an option here so I digress. BTW, when did Canada or any other country send a man to the moon and back. Using US Standard units of measurements? But I concede, I prefer using millimeters to inches!

...man to moon and back... NASA is metric. US military vehicles are metric. SI units are much better for math/science, as mentioned above, vs SAE. Especially in thermodynamics. Speaking of SAE (a US based organization for best practices), their standards are metric. And the inch unit we use is often referred to as the english system. The English use metric.??? Why are we Americans so stubborn to change? I guess it's what makes us Americans. We are definately different than everyone else on the planet.

Well, most of the rest of the world changed to metric over the past 50 years. Canada in 1970 - in spite of our nearest neighbour refusing to. If you research the history of metric in the US - the answer I saw in a number of places was that too many Americans would be unable to come to grips with the change - political reasons (politicians would be ousted by those that didn't want to change).

I recall my own reluctance, and that of friends and neighbours, but we did it - and nobody died as a result (I don't think so...). Many of us learned metric in High School years earlier - or college, so most of us knew what and why we needed to do it.

Y'all do know your speedometer can be switched to kilometers and back to miles - easily? About 80% of my riding is in USA.

Oh, and a yard of beer gets warm way to quick due to its long slender neck. So, that is not a positive for us either. I prefer the Assie oil can which is 3/4 of a liter and stays cold due to its girth.

VVTour, you're drinking it too slow if it's got a chance to get warm! Don, I hear you. I do like metric tools. That's all I buy. I don't think anyone still uses standard sizes, really do they? Maybe Government Motors does.

I'm Airborne, (82nd), but we don't get many 29 degree days.  It's been in the upper 40's F, lower 50's F the past few days and I'm still riding like it's summer, half gloves and just the jacket.  All The Way! Airborne!

I'm only on board with the metric system when I'm drinking a liter of beer.

Hey it ain't the cold that bothers me. It's the sliding around on the ice at temperatures under 30 degrees FARENHEIT or so.
On a bone dry day, riding in the cold ain't a problem if you're dressed for it.

I never understood jumping out of a perfectly good airplane but I tried it since the Army was paying for it. I'm good staying on the ground. Upper 40s/lower 50s is good for thin full finger gloves and a leather jacket. It's 34 now and I'll add a sweatshirt and long john pant but I'll ditch the sweatshirt before I get home.

American military vehicles are metric? I'll name three I know that are not, the HUMMV, M1 series Abrams Main Battle Tank and the M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle........... also Blackhawk UH 60 and many more all SAE. What US made Military Vehicle uses metric, could you name one. Oh yes least I forget the most mass produced and exported US Military vehicle ever made the M113 APC........... SAE!!!

When there's snow on the ground I no longer ride, plus all the salt and sand. I don't mind temp's in the 20 -30 as long as it will warm up during the day. When winter sets in its time for snowmobiles and skis. Yes retired I don't hump combat weight anymore, and so glad for it. Merry Christmas to all.
