Today I decided to replace the spark plugs in Nessy who now has 19k miles in 19 months of ownership.  Got the plugs at the local AutoZone for $1.95 each.  When I took the old plugs out I was shocked to see the gaps... .042 and .044 - on what should be .036.  So my question is, can the gaps widen that fast (19k miles) OR did the factory not gap them properly?

Yes, and I set mine at .30. I guess I better recheck the spec, just changed mine today after about 30,000 miles. Old plug gap was about .45, they started at .30.

I just changed mine yesterday and as you say the gap on my old set was also much wider than spec. In my case the old set was my second set and I had set the gap before I put them in so I attribute the wider gap this time to wear.

the book calls for .032 - .036, so I don't see no real harm at . 03, loose, like it is. I'll check them again in about 10,000 miles and see what's up. I road a parade once, on a very hot day. At the end, I shut the bike off, but it wouldn't refire. Pulled the plugs and the gaps were horrendous, so smacked them back down to a decent gap and it fired right up.

Smacking things often fixes them!  I am interested in seeing if this helps my idle... Sometimes it races and sometimes it drops below 900 rpm.

I have been having this issue for 2 years!!! Local dealership closed about 3 years ago. I have only changed oil since then (just look at my bald tires). I am very interested in this thread. What is the spark plug part # you got at Autozone? Many thanks in advance.

AutoZone part #444826 3481.  Taken from my receipt.  Also, I paid $2.49 each, not $1.95 as originally stated.

Honda use NGK along with lots of other bikes, Carefull when buying pugs from auto stores not all will fit in sprak plug slot.

I found another thread stating the plug to use. I went down to AutoZone, and they wanted to sell me
a cross referenced plug. I said no thanks, and went down to AdvanceAuto. They had the actual
NGK DCPR6E in stock. I bought 2, and the gap was exactly what the thread said it should be, no
adjusting to be made.

Test run with new plugs. 2 stalls (died) and one area where it took a few seconds to drop below
2,300 RPM with the throttle grip off. SO, IT AIN"T THE PLUGS )o:

I have done the manual unplugging of the idle control valve from another thread prior. The resetting
isn't the problem either.

Now, an attempt to take off the rear tire. Off to another thread.

Thank you for your posts.

Herb

Have you done the "with kill switch on, turn on key, listen until there is no more noise from the IAC, turn off key, wait until silence and listen again... repeat several times"?  I can't wait to try this when my bike idles weird again.  I've searched ALL the boards and know that if the battery is low (or bad connection) it will idle fast.  We'll see.

No, I have not read about that one. I will try it a few times. Thank you.
