Hi All, I am currently riding Kawasaki Vulcan 900 LT and getting ready to upgrade to a bigger bike. I love Vision's comfort and weather protection so I am sold on the product. Since this will be my first brand new bike purchase I wanted to understand what should I pay for it. With cars I usually look at the car's trade in value to see how much I am loosing once I drive off the lot and base my decisions on that. I looked up trade-in value for a 2012 Vision on KBB and it showed $12,800. Should I be mentally ready to loose almost 10K once I buy this bike. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Alex.

I wouldn't put much stock in KBB. They do the same devalue with Harley and Honda.

To help give you an idea of the cost, In 2010 I bought a new 8Ball Vision for $15,500 (list was $17,999) with the $499 list price Victory backrest included. This excludes TTT.

afarbman,
Do you WANT a brand new bike? I felt the same as you on the Vision after a test drive. After looking at the prices for a new bike and considering the devalue that *could* happen. I opted for a used bike. Found a 2008 about 200 miles from me from an individual. I also found several at dealers.

I test rode it and bought it. 8 months later I am a very happy camper.

My basic belief was -- If I didn't like the Vision, I could turn it without much loss. On the other hand, I could always sell it and upgrade to a newer model. So far, I am happy and have begun adding bling.

Happy trails.

I pretty much had the same plan as Wharf rat.

I nearly had a 2011 for only 15k, (lost out due to miscommunication) . I watched cycle trader, and just kept track.

I opted for the 2008 that I have, I did travel close to 400 miles to test drive, and a second trip to pick it up. Almost half the price of the new model. Now, I do want to point out, the bike is used, and you never completely know what the history totally is.

As my dad used to say, "six of one, half dozen of the other!"

BTW, I paid 12.5k for my 08 with close to 22k miles.

look around a dealer web sites for a left over model from previous years. You get a good discount and a new bike. this has worked for me.

If you CAN find a used 2012 for $12k BUY IT! My guess is you won't. Maybe a 2010 without ABS.
Resell value only matters if you plan on reselling it. I'm riding mine till there's no value left , then another 100k miles.

Why let the simple things in life bother you...If you like the bike and really want it, buy the thing and keep it a while and enjoy the best touring bike out there right now...Resale and trade-in values are all over the map..Unless you want to flip the bike in a year or two, perhaps you should look at something else......

If you buy a bike and worry about the resale value your not getting it for the right reason. You buy a motorcycle for how it makes you feel when you ride it.

I had the very same concerns as you did when I finally was talked into buying one. My wife just said 'do it'. Find a comfortable price, one that you can live with and 'do it' and enjoy. I've had my '12 Vision for a month now and would rather ride it than take the A/C car.

Thank you all for your replies. The reason why I worry about the trade-in value is because I tend to change things to frequently I cannot remember a car that I had for more than 3 years. I just love new technology and when something comes out I gotta have it or it will drive me nuts. From what I heard from you all, I am now leaning towards a used bike. Jonnyvision mentioned that it could be useful to know where I live. I live around Harrisburg, PA and I work in Richmond, VA (which is my weekend ride a lot of times and the reason I am looking to upgrade to a bigger bike to make my 4HR ride more comfortable).

I work in Richmond and live local. I ride an '08 that I've had since new. If you want to meet for lunch and talk a bit let me know. I personally like to run the wheels off, so trade-in, resale value is not a thought to me when I buy. Value of the vehicle is, and I can honestly say that the Vision is the best vehicle purchase I have made in my 37 years of driving and owning a vehicle. PM me if you'd like to meet up some time.

Look for good deals on a new 2012 since the 2013 are coming out now. If you can find a later model for a good deal with low miles that good too. I always search eBay and other online sources to get a sense of pricing. Good luck on your buying!

Just got a new 2012 Vision from All Ohio in Bedford Ohio. Listed at 21,499 dealer sold it for 18,999 Bronze. Bought it during a Victory Demo ride event. Gave me an additional grand for being a Veteran and a grand in accessories. So essentially 16,999. Would have put a grand in accessories anyway. Actually about 1,400 with a performance exhaust, kicker speakers, Air deflectors and heal shifter. Happy camper.

Congrats on the new bike and welcome to the fold. Judging from the elapse time from your first post to your purchase post you had already made that Vision purchase in your mind and wanted to hear from us here what you already knew and that is you were buying the best damn touring bike on the planet or above the planet. May you enjoy many miles of smiles til resale is meaningless.

Congrats on the new bike, you won't care what anyone says the re-sale value is because you won't want to sell it.
I had a Harley rider last week tell me "Those Victories are good bikes, but I didn't get one because they don't hold their value" I responded with, "I didn't buy it to sell it I bought it to ride it."

Got my first 500 miles on the bike in just one trip to Richmond and back home... It is an amazing machine!!! In my Kawi passing a truck on a highway was an uncomfortable experience, but on a Vision I do not even notice them. On the way home got into heavy rain and while looking for a bridge to stop and get my rain gear on had to ride for 10 min in that rain, when stopped noticed that I was almost dry With the rain gear on continued my trip no problem. Cannot wait to open up the engine a bit, was very careful with the break in period.

So the long story short, at the end of it I am not concerned with the re-sale value because I do not believe I will be selling this bike anytime soon.

Thank you all for your input and encouragement.

Don't change your story so quickly? There's plenty of maintenance to do and new colors come out every year! I saw a few posts ago, where a guy never kept his bike, longer than when it was time for a new tire. (Can't imagine that one) Just sayin'! Sounds like you get the itch and you would be the perfect person to let us know all the new intricacies of the new model as it arrives.

Congratz!! Welcome to the familia and I too had a Vulcan 900 Custom. Boy let me tell you best decision I made to buy a used 08 and then only weeks later rode to DC for Rolling Thunder 500 miles one way. The only this that was sore was my neck from all that wind in my sh*t eating grin lol. The ride back was even better as I cut through Allentown on Rt 476 awesome ride through there until it was pouring.

One thing I do recommend before fall comes is get the lowers, it will be the best 250 bucks you spend on the bike. Trust me, I have tested the colder spring morning 40 degrees only wearing a sweatshirt and heated grips on. I was not a bit cold and you know on the 900 I would've had full gear

Wow Po. I know that a 'sickle may be no more than a bag of bolts put together, an inanimate object if you will to some to be used and discarded. But to others, it becomes a personal thing, not that it is who we are, but it becomes the line we walk in life, for life. All of my motorcycles are very personal, from the two CB350s that I took to make one run, to the CB750Custom that fueled the desire more to ride. Then I had the years of "riding" behind the steering wheel, dreamng to be riding again, on an Indian no less. Grabbing the throttle on the '84 Gold Wing in 2005 started something that I could not stop. Only the '93 Gold Wing GL1500 was the gal I couldn't stay with long. She was as graceful as an M1 Tank, but she pushed me to get the Vision with nary a thought of selling or resale value. Nope. One day, when I'm long gone, someone will come across this old Vision and find a note of the adventures that this old man had. Whether doing the slalom during my daily commute, seeing the ice on the trees through the mountains, or watchin the sunrise in my rearview and seeing the sunset as I roll toward the horizon, the reader will understand this was more than a machine.

I like a rider who doesn't think of resale value, but the value of the ride.

Yeah, your probably right, oh great VamanysmilesofmilesRyder. But if he upgrades then you and I might be in the market for a lightly used bike that needs new tires, an oil change, and lastly some fork oil. We could pick it up on the down low and cheap. Between a handful of us on here, there will have to be a few salvage bikes to keep ours running. Seeing as how you don't want to get rid of yours, eventually around the 1,000,000 mile mark your gonna NEED a FEW THINGS!

The only way anybody will get to know about you and that bike, will be if you start writing it down and sticking it under the seat for someone to come across, what a find that would be! 100 years later, barn find, Victory Vision parked since rolling a Million miles, 1 of 978 bikes ever made in the very first year. Then pulling the bike apart for a frame off restoration, only to find a usb stick with many pages of stories about the bike and the travels it had made. OOOOOOWwwwwEEEEEE!!!!!!!! What a story!

You know after reaching a 100k in under 4 years, you only have to go another 36 years or less and you will make a cool Million Miles on one bike. Now that my friend is an Iron Butt Award worth achieving. Seeing as how you might be getting near retirement and if you drive more than CoolhandRetiredLuke still rolling like he's a ball in the Women's Soccer Olympic Gold Medal match, I can see where it would be very possible.

Here's a cold Dr. Pepper raised in appreciation of the challenge you have just accepted. (applaud lightly if still at work)

as certain as I sound I truly don't count my chickens before they hatch. I take one day at a time, but I never thought I'd be riding at 122,000 miles and this bike would still be riding like new. I did many wrong things as implied by some, but it seems to have come out right. Now that I mentioned it, I ought to create a scrap book of the adventures, even loosely. Like a saying goes, while most will never remember what I do, or much else about me, they will remember I rode a motorcycle.

Surprised that it was an issue with only 1.5 hrs in the saddle. If it wasn't an issue with what you were wearing you might want to consider trying a beaded seat cover. Even the Mrs. comments on how much she likes using one.

I couldn't grab the year of your bike Alex, and I don't know colors and years. But my guess it is an '11 or later which has a firmer seat. Having rode one once, I may have the same issue with the firmer seat. I wouldn't recommend going with an older model seat because there are some changes that they wouldn't fit. However, I believe the pans are the same, and I would recommend using the softer foam and covering with leather. The most important part for anyone of is the seat and it's worth a few dollars to get it right.

afarbman - seems at times like I am riding on two rails on either side of my A$$. Pending on where you put your feet as to whether or not it rolls your pelvis and your sitting directly on your coxis(sp). I have contemplated using some foam I have and see if it works better, but now that you brought it up...........................

When I ride my wife's much smaller Savage 650 my A$$ really bothers me and my knees are higher up so I am sittin with my knees up and pelvis rolled forward. When I ride my dirtbike with a 36 inch seat height (something like that). My A$$ rarely hurts like on my Vision, but my feet are further under me and my pelvis is rolling more forward. Very interesting.

So I wonder If I were to raise the seat height would it make a difference, seems like it would and get sitting back up straight. Right now, I feel like I'm in a Barcolounger and just hanging out, which for quite a few is quite comfortable. I have to go see now.

I prefer a firm seat. I replaced the foam in my seat with very firm high density foam.
Works for me.

Bike that I got is a 2012 Vision Tour in bronze mist color. Redoing the seat right now is a bit out of my budget. I am waiting for a backrest that is on the back order, which I am hoping that will help. I also went ahead and ordered a gel pad with sheep's skin this morning for $120. Seemed like a cheap option that hopefully can help me to get to winter. At that point I may consider to send the seat to Russell to get it re-done (as long as they can keep it as "heated seat"). Any of you got the Russell Day-long ride seat?

Pad that I got is ORTHO-DELUXE:

I'm hoping I can share my new venture in redoing my own seat.  Just the buying and treating the leather alone will save a lot.  However, buying and making tools will bring the price up to a cheap reupholster job, but it will be a premium seat that when I am done will be well worth it.  I've heard negative on the long distant rides on gel pads, but the sheep's skin may off set that.  Keep us posted on how things work out for you.

I've used these on other bikes, and works pretty well. $30
