The Vision made it to Prudhoe Bay!!!

I'm heading home, only 2100 miles to go. Today I rode through the Northern Rockies. 100's of miles of winding mountain roads.

I love that midnight sun!

Good Job!! lookin' forward to the pictures!!
Use care washing your bike as the road dust that covers it is volcanic in origin and if you scrub and wipe, it's like wiping the paint with a red SCOTCHBRITE drenched in COMET Cleanser, unless you're after that satin finish look. And months from now you'll still be finding little pockets of the stuff in gaps and crevices.

Rollin', What a trip. My mind is spinning with Qs. But the top two are: What would you do differently if you were to do it again? And, did you ever have the bike go down and rest on the tip-overs? That road looked gnarly to say the lest. Well done!!!

I don't think I would change a thing. A different front tire would have been nice in the muddy areas but then it would not have lasted through the rest of the trip.

Bike didn't go down but I did have a few moments. I had a few times where I thought the front end was going to slide out from under me in the mud. And ridding on the larger rocks I thought my arms are going to get pulled out.  In some of the areas I would have to stop and catch my breath and take a break. This was the most physically challenging ride I have ever done. Getting older isn't helping.

Rollin' do you have any dirt bike experience? I have quite a bit and I find that with E3's, I can drift the rear and the front rarely gets unsettled, if it does it doesn't scare the O-CRAP-O out of me. Just curious, if you found it similar but it doesn't sound like it. That does look like a gnarly ride, would love to do it also, I need to scrape up some sofa money first.

On your way south can I suggest a meal and or a night stay at DawsonPeaks Resort. 6 miles south of Teslin. Dave and carolin treated us like family during our 6 days alcan washout. Dave is a biker and lived the vision. They love bikers and their stories. Felt so bad for us but they made our captivity bearable!
Ride safe

No dirt bike experience but years of off roading with my Jeeps. I know that slow gets you home and speed breaks things and I know that engine braking is better than the wheel brakes going down hill on a muddy road. Easy on and off the gas.

The E3 on the front did ok most of the time. It did not like the hard packed dirt roads that had a thin layer of mud on them. Those roads were scary.

A good reason to go slow is if you crash and hurt yourself near Prudhoe Bay the nearest hospital is Fairbanks and that's 500 miles away. And that's if someone finds you.

I know of two riders that crashed and broke bones and needed to be air-lifted while I was there. They were riding with a group.

The Dunlop Winter Sport run flat snow tire is the best tire I have ever had on a road trip. Never lost traction on any road condition.

The Dalton - the surprise to me about the Dalton Highway was that it never stopped changing.
It was never the same for more than a mile, It could be a paved road with deep dips, pot holes, frost heaves and broken edges and then change to loose gravel without warning.
The gravel may be small or large stones and sometimes just rocks, then there would be a hill climb on a mud road followed by a large dip and then a curve with construction equipment working.
Just when you thought the road was getting a little easier there would be a tanker truck spraying water on the road.
When it was dry there would be blinding dust and blinding sun at 3:00 am. I also had rain and fog and light snow near Prudhoe Bay. And a ride through the mountains twice.
It never stopped changing! And you get to do the road twice! On the return trip a hill climb becomes a descending dirt/mud road.
You also have to deal with the large trucks, construction equipment and work zones.
Most of the time there was one good lane, down the center. No one wanted to be by the edge. Trucks always get lane choice.

Within the first 10 miles I thought it would be more than I could handle but the Vision made it through.

Steve good to hear the Dunlop Winter Sport CT performed well for you. I just ordered my 2nd one, going to mount it later this year.

Not sure if you saw this Bridgestone MT up front and Dunlop CT on rear post ?

Also, just wondering how some of your mods held up, like the mud flap and the belt guard?

I think all the mods helped,

Mud flap - I saw a Vision on the lower part of the Alaska Highway and his front cylinder fins were filled with mud. I never had any mud on the engine or oil cooler.

Skid plate - I heard it bang a few times.

Belt guard - There is gravel everywhere. I rode on a lot of gravel before I even made it to Alaska. On the Alaska Highway all the gas station lots are gravel, road repair=gravel and a lot of mud covered gravel on the Dalton.

Headlight guard - Hit a bird on the interstate. May have helped.

The Dalton Highway is 414 miles. There are 3 places to get gas. After you leave Coldfoot there is nothing to help you.

Next gas 240 miles-

In Coldfoot. One is not like the others -

Early morning and riding north. Into the sun? (Pipeline on the left)

Construction! Can't get away from it.

Fuel it! In Prudhoe Bay, AK.

The mid-night sun. My watch is still on central time. 3:00 am central, mid-night in Alaska.

It's a no-ground plane CB antenna. Never used the CB, had it just in-case of an emergency.

My cell phone only worked in two places in Alaska. Fairbanks and Prudhoe Bay. Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay is 500 miles.

With the CB you might be able to contact a truck driver if you need help.

SYNSTR - 2012-07-06 11:34 AM What was the reaction to a VISION by the BEEMER riders?

Mostly they were surprised. All were nice, some shook my hand.

The comment I heard the most - "that thing is huge!'

Comic relief aside, I was going to ask what people felt about such a big bike doing this trip. I know a few Gold Wingers have done the trip as well, but over all, I'm sure it is more favored by those BMWers and other type off road bikes. Do you have the stock front forks, Steve? I'm curious how those held up, and I'm still curious of how you think the stock E3 would have fared.

Stock fork.

If you were lucky and had no rain, water trucks  or construction (construction areas are muddy) the stock E3 on the back might make it. If I was going to do this again I would have another Dunlop Winter Sport on the back. I may try a different front tire. The Winter Sport never lost traction.

The most challenging areas for the front tire were hard packed dirt with a thin layer of mud. Water trucks and rain will do that.

And when you see that Next Services 240 Miles sign you wish you had a run flat on the front also.

Belt guard - dry gravel maybe you don't need it. Muddy gravel and you can hear it flying around then I was glad it was there.

Mile marker 0 in Dawson Creek. From this point it's still 2000 miles to Prudhoe Bay, AK.

I don't know what I would use. A tire that would be best for the Dalton Highway wouldn't last the full UCC trip.

Some riders (smarter riders) change tires in Fairbanks.

but you're saying your E3 front tire held up? Any pictures. While I may never make the trip, I'm preparing for it mentally in case the opportunity suddenly presents itself. I want to be ready.

Hey Steve,

Tried to find the answer online but no luck.  How much was gas at Prudhoe Bay?

$5.51 per gallon for regular. All of the gas stops on the Dalton and most of the gas stops on the Alaska Highway have one grade of gas.

This is the fuel stop at the Yukon River Camp, Mile Marker 56. One of only three places to get gas on the Dalton Highway.

Yukon River Camp - Mile Marker 56

Coldfoot - Mile Marker 175

Prudhoe Bay - Mile Marker 414

Day one. Leaving Milwaukee.

I had planned to leave early Thursday morning. When I left work on Wednesday (June 6th) I knew I would never be able to sleep so I started getting ready to leave.

Ate, finished packing, looked the bike over one more time and left at 8:24 pm central time. Heading south to Key West, FL.

I wasn't sure how far I would make it that first day but I had a good night and day and before I knew it I was in Georgia. I stopped for gas in Valdosta, GA and it was just starting to rain so I decided to stop there.

It was 5:20 pm eastern time and I had ridden 1034 miles. This would qualify for the IBA SS1000. I sent the paperwork in yesterday.

This was a good start to what would be a 16 day road trip.

Stopping in Valdosta turned out to be a great idea!

I love reading about your trips. I learn a lot from your posts. I can hardly wait for the opportunity to do some serious touring and upper tier ironbutt rides. I love teh challenge, however , I will say I have no desire for the unpaved stuff . It kind of bothers me that I don't want to do this trip because I consider myself an adventurous guy . Anyway, you are awesome!

Calcium Chloride - It's used on the full length of the Dalton Highway.

It reduces dust and helps to bond the road. Sometimes they grade it in and sometimes they just spray it on the road.

Near Prudhoe Bay, AK -

Rollin, glad to see you made the trip to Alaska. I'm not going to be able to do the UCC this year. Oh well, what can you do. Looks like you had a great ride and I congratulate you on your accomplishment. You started out with a SS1000, awesome. Talk about setting the standard high. Good job, and congrats again, that was an epic ride that only a few will be able to complete. Truly an epic ride.

Thanks Bill!!

I found out today that the IBA cashed the checks for the last two rides that I did. An SS1000 on the way to Florida and the UCC. When they cash the check that means the ride has been approved. Cool! Just waiting for the certs and pins.

Some of my friends and co-workers think I should stop doing these rides. They think I have used up my luck. I have been very lucky in many ways and I know it. They might be right.

I did the math and my total riding against the clock Iron Butt ride mileage is 30,441 miles. All on a Victory and never a problem with the bike, not even a flat tire.

Very, very lucky!

Nice pictures! I tried to post something but my access is limited out her in the sticks. You are not lucky, you pay attention to the details. I would rather be lucky than good any day.
