I'm out on my road trip and I thought it would be easy to find someone to change the oil while I was out but that hasn't been the case. Where I was in IL the place closed down and literally every MC shop shutdown the entire weekend. I'm like no wonder half of them are out of business.

Anyway I'm in Nashville now does anyone know if the any dealers are actually open tomorrow. I figure bigger city they'll be out sellin! I hope. If not do you think the oil will make it home. I'm at 5100 miles today and got about 800 home tomorrow. I dont think going 1000 over will hurt the motor but i dont know how sensitive these motors are.

Or are there any parts from an auto parts place that work as well (or Walmart) where I can just do it myself?

Any help is appreciated.

Don't sweat the petty things .... pet the sweaty things.

Get yer priorities straight .... oil ain't one of the most important things - as long as the level isn't down.

Just worried about it since this is the first oil change and the break in oil is still in there. If I need to top it up what's everyone using?

If you need to 'top it up' - you got a bigger problem. Your oil is also a 'coolant' - so any good 10-40 semi-synthetic will work. Singer sewing machine oil will work. You should not be experiencing 'oil loss' on a new bike - so I doubt you need to worry at all. Since this is Sunday night - I am sure there will be 2302 'experts' chiming in on this soon ...

so you didn't get the 500 mile oil change? Then like Don said, finish your trip and mess with it when you get home. I doubt another 800 miles on 5100 mile oil will make a difference. Ride safe and enjoy

I bought it with 1500 on it. It was there demo bike so I assume it was changed at 500.

I agree, just ride it home and then deal with it. Unless you want to come up to Akron, we could change it here and have a cold one while we do it! :-)

I don't believe you have harmed anything even if you ran over on the 500 mile oil change. Mine was at 2,000 when I first changed the oil and I'm now at 117,000 miles on the clock. But I will say, shame on you for not being more aware of your bike. I would have asked just to be sure if the oil had been changed when I bought the bike. Also, no slight against any motorcycle dealer, but they will screw you on holiday weekends when the majority of the bikes are out on the road the propensity is greater for those to be in need. And almost always a motorcycle dealer is closed on Mondays. So never assume you'll get help along the way unless you call and check with dealers in the vicinity where you'll be riding.

On the flip side, all of your car parts stores are open and probably will open early. Find you an O'Reilly's and get you some Lucas 10w40 motorcycle oil and a 51356 Wix filter and you'll be back in business. I think they'll have a pan you can use and a few rags. Now you'll have piece of mind and ride.

I agree, just ride until you get home, going over a few hundred miles won't hurt it.

If you feel you absolutely must change- I'm sure there's an O'Riley's or a Walmart open today-buy a low profile oil change pan, a hex set, filter& oil-do a curb side change, give the used oil back to the store and your conscience is cleared.

I've not tried this but most of the big name auto parts stores are not opposed to you doing minor work on your car in their parking lot. They will even loan you tools for free and offer to help. I would bet that most would be more than happy to help you change out the oil on the road in a pinch. After all they are selling you what you need. And they will dispose of the oil for you. BTW any filter specified for an 01 or newer honda civic will fit your Vision if they are having trouble finding the one specified for your bike. Ride safe!

this is the exact reason why when i go on Big trips i change the oil before i leave. now if your trip was more than 5000 miles i can see your problem. i would rather change my oil too soon than late..

I've never understood why Motorcycle shops and dealerships are run like Barbershops and are closed on Sunday/Monday, If I'm out riding and need a part on a late Saturday, I really don't want to log an extra night in the Motel 6 waiting for the dealer to open on Tuesday.

In pennsylvania they had to be closed on sunday. If they were to be open they were only allowed to sell accessories and nothing else. It was a state law!

I may not make no friends here, but let us not forget that this is not just another weekend. I'm 42 years old and I remember when stores would be closed on Sunday and nothing would be open on National Holidays. I also remember when flag etiquette was taught in school around Flag Day and americans did not have to be told to stand and remover your hat before the playing of the National Anthem. I would rather ride in a parade knowing that every American had the day off and each person took a small portion of the day to remember those that can no longer ride, walk, or live a normal life. If my bike was down I would walk in the parade or at least stand on the route to salute the flag that I defended. Not every one made it home the same that they left. Some made the ultimate sacrifice and others are forced to relive their pain on a daily basis due to scars and wounds, some of which, never heal.

I was lucky, I made it home without being wounded. I salute all those veterans that served, not just today, but every day. I can change my oil some other day. today is about remembering something so much more important.

taz456...Right on my brother!!!! I lost one Son is Desert Storm and have another who has served two tours in Irag and came home safe...I lost 2 Uncles in WW11 and know the pain....I rode today for a short ride to my oldest Son's house and saw the grand total of 3 flags out around our sub-divisions...Lots of folks with their boats in water, etc. etc..which is their right and business, but it pains me greatly to see how many Americans could give a damn about those who have given much to defend this country and seem to care less about the signifcance of this Memorial Day Holiday......BTW I am (72) tried to serve in Vietnam, but was not able due to Polio as a teenager......JMHO

The saddest part of my day happened as the colors passed and I saw so many people remained in the chairs with their hats on carrying on conversations. I saw a man that looked very aged wearing a vietnam veterans leather vest. I struggled to hold back tears as the man fought his own body to pull himself to a standing position. He managed a salute as the color guard passed him. so many able-bodied people just sat there as if the flag means nothing.

I guess you do not understand if you did not defend her or experience the pain of a loved one who did. Remember after the 9/11 attacks, how many flags you saw flying? I wonder what happened to them all, cause I did not see that many today either.

It is tradition brought on by need. Most of the places have bike stuff doings on the weekends. dirt biking, hill climbing, four wheeling, Enduro's Etc. So Monday is really the only day they have off & rest up from thier week ends.

At the end of the day it's still a business and the business should be open in my opinion when the maximum number if people who want to spend there money are out spending there money. I know motorcycle dealers in my area are open bankers hours during the week, short hours on Saturday and closed Sunday Monday and then complain they don't sell any bikes. DUH everyone who has money (except retirees) is freakin workin!

As for the topic. I agree I'll just wait till I get home. Providing they did the 500 mile service I'll only be a couple hundred miles over so no big deal. I had planned on getting it done around the corner from where I was staying but they just went out of business and the other dealer closed the entire weekend including Friday. Ah well. I know better for next time.

On the positive side doing 700-800 miles a day on the Vision is easy! 1900 so far this trip. I had planned on being home tonight but that awful storm in north Florida but the big kibosh on that. I started in Nashville this morning, road through Deals Gap (my baby earned her sticker) and mad it all the way to cordele GA before I started to hit that storm. So I got off for the night and will resume home in the morning.

Oh and as a former Army tanker the lack of respect the flag irks the shit out of me too...
