Took my '09 VV to the local dealer for a screeching noise that started over winter. Bike would start fine and the engine noises were normal. When I started out...after a few seconds I had a noise like a dry bearing and this lasted for a minute or two. The longer the bike sat (2-3 weeks), the louder/longer the noise. They found a belt out of adjustment and it's been much quieter since then. I do get a little of the same noise now and then when 1st starting out....but it is much bette and I did notice some slack in the drive train now. Anyway, I had the bike on a stand and was detailing it...then found some "Junk" on the about 2/3 of the rear rim. There is a lot of brake dust adhering to it...the junk seems to be dried on.....wondering if it could be from a bearing or such? I plan on cleaning the rim very well and monitor it for awhile. Does anyone have any suggestions or similiar experiences? I originally bought this bike for my wife...and she did not like it that well...so it did sit around for close to a year. It now has 4500 miles on it and I ride it weekly. I did get the 5 year warranty with the purchase and have about 34 months left. I may just have to run it until the possible source of the noise finally lets go. Thanks Uncle Dave

You need to pop off that wheel; look and feel the bearings and make sure that they're OK. Check the rotor and see if it's scored and gouged. Check the brake pads and make sure that they're still installed correctly. Look at the belt and the wheel pulley and see if they're worn or abnormally worn.

Good suggestions...will check the brakes and rotor...and the belt. It was a LOT quieter after the dealer worked on it....the only thing he could really find was the tight belt.

If you can jack the bike up and spin the rear tire, this should tell you if a bearing is bad. Not a lot of reports of bad bearings as a comon problem. My guess is the dirt is belt dust and brake dust as well as some road dirt. My rear rim gets a coating of kind of a black dust between washings. My guess is you are OK and just seeing the normal stuff.

UD, Everything is worth checking into, but I don't think it's your bearings. If your bearings were making that much noise after this time they would be totally gone. I'm still on my orginal wheelbearings without any problems. Everytime I replace a tire or pull a wheel I check them and they are tight but roll well. You're probably onto the problem with the belt, belt alignment, but I would check the tightness of the rear axle. The belt on the Vision is suppose to feel loose, compared to other bikes. Vic loosed them up shortly after putting them on streets because of the squeal. Mine never squealed like a little girl, but it did growl, until the belt was adjusted to the new spec.

BTW, I'm rolling through your town toward the evening next Tuesday on my way to knox. PM if you want to meet for a minute.

Cleaned the rim and the brake pads are like new. Everything seems to point to the belt alignment that the dealer repaired/adjusted. Took it out the last few days and seems fine. Thanks for all of the help and advice! Shiny side up and Rollin' side down.
