Posts: 15 St. Louis Mo. | Anyone else have any experience with a wrecked Arlen Ness Vision? I hit a deer Monday night at around 55 mph, which tore off most of the front end damaged both gas tanks and bent the forks. The bike wasn't even broken in yet 370 miles. I'm waiting for the insurance adjuster. If the bike isn't totalled what's it like getting parts (it's got all the 09 ness graphics)? If it is totalled I'll see if I can buy it for parts. |

I live in a heavily populated area west of St Louis. I wish they hibernated. At least this one won't be jumping in front of anymore moving vehicles. |

I hit a deer he wraped around bike and broke my leg. I had 3 grand in broken plastic. Parts are plentiful.
Never put my bike down Visions are built like brick shithouses.
Met Mike Song at the IMS in NYC I shook his hand and thanked him for saving my life then told him the tale of Deer Crusher.

I think it helps that I do not ride much after dark but have gone on deer rides in the cage just before dark and seen a couple hundred deer in multiple fields in the Big Flats, WI area. Glad your alright, the bike can be replaced and as TrekWolf164 said, you have no broken bones. Good thing you were on a Vision, the plastic took some of the energy, kinda like an Indy car.

I'm sure getting parts won't be a problem. I think it's a great idea to buy it back and fix it for cheap. Good to hear you came out of it okay. It's amazing to me that you can hit a deer, do that kind of damage and not go down... I know someone else who hit a deer on a Vision, with his girlfriend on back. Broke the front fender, dented the trim and damn near ripped the dear in half! |

The bike remained stable even with that great of an impact. "Deer may stop roaming at night after a few more are killed by Vision Pilots". Nice. I think I'll try a deer whistle. Does anyone know if they really work? 8ball I was born in Milwaukee and have relatives up in Harrison Hills (between Tomahawk and Rhinelander) I love northern Wi. |

Posts: 112 Denver, Iowa | About three months ago, there was a BRAND NEW '09 Ness at the Osage Beach, Missouri dealership... saw it with my own two eyes. Then, the owner of our old dealer here in the metro area (which has closed up) told me about a dealer somewhere down south that bought all of the remaining '09 Ness Visions left unsold. Don't know if it's true, but the last number I heard was he had four BRAND NEW ones in stock. I'll have to check on that one. I realize I'm biased since I own one, but I think we own the most beatiful Ness Victorys ever made. Never owned a street bike in my 40+ years here on God's great green earth, then I saw the '09 Ness Vision... I signed on the line!
On a far more serious note... I'm glad you are OK! Deer are rampant here in Iowa, and I've only hit one (in my truck). It really messed up my truck, and it lived. Ran away from the scene. But to see a dozen in the ditch as you travel at dusk or dawn is a normal sight. Again, thankfully you're OK!
They just sold a wrecked '09 Ness Vision on Copart. The owner of that bike... he's on here sometimes, too. He might be able to offer some insight as to what his insurance company was dealing with on this particular bike. Maybe he can chime in...

Yes My bike was 5 days new when a 200 pound Bambi stopped in the street with What kind of Motorcycle is that look on his face.
As far as Deer Whistles both air driven and motorized were tested deer pay no attention. |

If theres a two block deep green belt in your neighborhood, you probably have deer in them. deer don't hibernate, they aren't built to survive without a constant source of food, they're closer to bovine than ursus.
Don't use commercal 'COYOTE PEE' to keep them away from your wifes roses, your yard will be full of anxious looking male dogs looking for dates because the COYOTE PEE comes from female COYOTES! |

Posts: 15 St. Louis Mo. | Godspeed thanks for the info. There are 2 new ones at Jones Powersports in Columbia Mo (one has miles the owners demo). So if mine is totalled I'll just get another 09. Great motorcycle even for hitting deer, not that I want to do that again. The Osage Beach dealership is owned by Seebold I think. I would prefer getting another new one if that can happen. If they choose to pay to repair it I will have my dealer use the rider down program. Thanks for the tip ScoreBo. |

Posts: 15 St. Louis Mo. | I'll pass on the Deer Whistle. Thought it might be useless. If it works like a dog whistle they may come to check it out. I agree we see so many deer now they're starting to look like long legged urban rats. The police told me that one had recently jumped off an overpass into traffic. It ended up going through the windshield of a passing car. |

Posts: 935 Rockford, IL | If they do total your bike you will probably NOT be able to purchase it back. This depends on your state laws. Most states have so called "chop shop" laws that prevent the average consumer from purchasing vehicles that have been deemed a total loss. For example here in Illinois the law is that the vehicle must be nine calendar years old (or older) in order for the vehicle owner to retain the vehicle. If the vehicle is less than nine years old then only a company with whats called a UDL Salvage license can purchase the vehicle.
Oh yea.....glad to hear you are doing ok !!!

" After all, the greater your forward energy, the greater your impact force. Yeh, we?ve heard the folk tale of a motorcyclist riding at warp speed through the forest at night, and slicing a deer in half without dropping the bike. Even if that folk tale is true, the rider was extremely lucky, not clever or skillful. For every folk tale of slamming into a wild animal without getting hurt, there are several other reports of riders being seriously injured, and motorcycles destroyed. " I've heard of 3 Visions hitting deer without going down. |

Go here to resize your photos: http://pixlr.com/editor/
Click on "open image from computer" open pic from your 'puter...
Then click on "Image" top left, in the black bar
Then "image size" make it smaller, maybe half of what evers already in the top box. Make sure you check the "constrain proportions" box or you'll have one goofy looking pic... |

Posts: 103 Duanesburg N.Y. | When my bike jumped off my bike lift it took a month to get it fixed. It took a week just order all the damaged parts then 2 weeks for the parts to trickle in, a week dickin at the paint shop, and it was assembled in one day.
No matter how long it takes it will take longer than they say and the fustration factor will be high. sorry to hear about the damage. I was there 8 months ago

I was burning the rear wheel filling the garage with smoke wnen I released the front brake the Vision launched at the rear wall imagine my surprise as the bike and I ended up in the pool in the backyard.
I turned and looked back at the house with a large hole in the cinderblock wall.
OK that never happened but it is was what came to mind when I read cinderblock

Posts: 804 Perry Hall, MD | I have the deer whistles on my bike. Now way to tell if they have prevented any from jumping out in front of me, but I can tell you that they didn't work for the several that have. My morning commute is almost always in the dark through some areas with significant deer populations. It is my greatest fear.
To date I've only hit one (actually it hit me from the side). Fortunately I didn't go down either, just replaced some body parts and lower deflectors.
Glad you're OK and good luck with the repairs. If it is totaled buying it back for parts would really be worth considering. |

It is unlikely that the bike will be totaled. My wife did $11,000 damage to a 2010 Cross Roads and the insurance company fixed it. It took 10 weeks to get all the parts and bike back together. The positive side is that I did $5,000 damage to a 2010 Goldwing in the same accident and it took 11 weeks and me looking at a salvage yard for 1 part. Needless to say the GW went down the road and I love my new Vision.
Good luck. |
