I was able to get the pipes off of mine without lifting the bike to change the tips.

While removing the mufflers is pretty easy......setting it on the tipovers will make it even easier. Drop on the right tipover for the left muffler and vice-versa for the other.

Where the two head pipes enter into the crossover pipe...that was the hardest part of my exhaust removal. Also, check your crossover pipe to be sure there is no exhaust leak. I used an exhaust-putty(not silicone) type of stuff (from NAPA, I think) on all of my couplings to insure I have no exhaust leaks.

To answer your original question... no.

There are 6 or 8 screws, I forget, than a few clips. I have taken them on and off several times. I either get it off (or on) super easy or I have a bitch of a time. They require a little finesse to get them to clear the saddlebag doors. I wish somebody would make a video of that.
They must come off to remove the mufflers.

Also to make removing the mufflers a little easier, find a strap wrench. This way you can twist the mufflers downwards to clear the mounting bolts without having to take the back bracket loose (the one under the back lights). You will also have to raise the bottom edges of the back body panel around the back lights to get that side panel loose because the back tab is engaged with it.

Yes, if you open the saddlebag doors, you will see the screws.
