Posts: 785 Mt. Vernon, WASH. | Want to see other tricks your vision can play on you? two simple tests for pilots show some dramatic things. A head on picture of a Boeing 747 with a 2 inch wing span held @ arms length represents the airplane @ 2 miles distance, if you look directly at the picture and move it towards you at normal speed, @ about half distance, it disappears in the 'convergence cone' of your normal vision. Keep in mind the 747 would be going about 350 MPH.
On the road as well as while flying, if a vehicle or air airplane merging parallel to you isn't moving on your windshield, you will collide with it. If it's moving forward in your vision means you will come in behind it, moving back in your vision means you will come out ahead of the target vehicle/airplane.

I find myself zoning in the car, but on the bike, it is a very rare occurance and usually only happens when there is no other cars close to me. Then, I'll usually find one behind that I didn't know was there. Personally, I feel that you may be the best motorcycle rider there is, keeping your focus on what is going on around you is the key to riding another day. |

CBDR _ Constant Bearing, Decreasing Range. Boy did that bring back some tense moments/memories from the Persian Gulf.

Maybe this is why some accidents are followed by the statement, "He came out of no where" or "I never saw him".
Often followed by... "He must have been speeding."
So madam, at what speed do other vehicles become invisible to you? |
