Well I was coming home tonight on my Vision; running at about 70mph in 6th gear on the highway....

...suddenly I head a muffled "bang" or soft "crack" (hard to describe the sound) and felt a slight bump somewhere in the lower rear of the bike. Then about 3-4 seconds later I heard it again; and I felt it again. WTF ???

It was dark and I had heavy highway traffic all around me so I couldn't stop but got the speed down some (no braking action to do that) and ultimately got to my exit. The bike seemed fine and I was eager to get it home and get a jack up under t to see what may have happened.

Well, I spend a lot of time under the bike with a flashlight and I can't see any damage to the belt drive, tire, rotor, all the fixings and fasteners and the bike seems to handle normally.

Other than running over something in the dark (which I don't think I did) what do you guys think it could've been? What else to check? Could/would a backfire at that speed possibly cause this sound and sensation (if that is even plausible)?

Mine did something similar when my right lower fell off and I ran over it.

If I were to bet, I'd say small chunks of tire. Probably had a truck on the highway ahead of you getting ready to throw a shoe. They are almost impossible to see once the light fades. Give her a run on a safe, open roadway and feel her out. I suspect she's fine.

Hope it was chunks of tire. Will check her out on a good run later... thanks!

if nothing ain't broke or danglin' you hit something, or someone in the road. have you check on any reports of hit and runs in the area? I hope you're not this sensitive in the future because you'll drive yourself nuts "what was that...?" whenever you ride...

No, I'm not "overly sensitive" but this sound and sensation was totally "out of the blue" ...completely took me by surprise and then was very mysterious, I've got a lot of miles under my butt on bikes; but this is the first incident that occurred and was very unusual. As I am now riding an unusual bike; I want to make sure that nothing unusual is going on with it....

Had you just shifted into 6th? Sounds like it could possibly been that you didn't have it fully in gear. Mine has done that a few times after not shifting it firmly enough. Hard to understand what you heard over the compter screen, just throwing out ideas for you to chew on.

No, was running for awhile in 6th gear. I think I was accelerating a little at speed; when I heard and felt the first incident of it; came off the throttle and then gave it a little gas; then I heard and felt the second happening of it. Just really bizarre. My first thought was that I had a blowout; but the tire didn't seem squirrelly. Then a minute passed and I was sort of wondering if someone shot at the back of my bike... I actually was half expecting bullet holes while I started looking at it; after I dismounted....

what I would look for is on the belt, very slowly and carefully. Something may have gotten up in there, didn't break it of course, but caused the bike to feel like it jumped as it rolled through the pulley. When my belt broke a lug, I felt it through the floorboard and actually the thought the transmission was going...

Yes, I did scrutinize the belt and the pulleys very closely. Didn't see anything that would've gotten up in between the logs and teeth. Looks normal.
