Posts: 79 Michigan | I will be taking her in Tuesday for the 500 mile maintenance. Other than the check list of standard items to be checked/changed is there anything else you feel I should ask the dealer to check? The list seems pretty standard and I don't know how many dealers do much more than change the oil/filter anyway.
No issues with it so far that need mention.

Open the manual and ask 'what on your list is in the items the manufacturer recommends?, donot do ANYTHING other than whats shown in this manual or that will be on you'.
The majority of dealerships (cars and boats and bikes) do their own lists and use them as a quick way to get into your wallet to get extra money for things that really donot need doing.
They might try to bend you over and insert some smoke in a dark place, remind them that the manual was written by the engineering dept to cover what needs doing @ given intervals, and not doing whats on their 'free money list' will not void your warranty-if you let them know right up front that you've brought the 'BULLSHIT' whistle with you and aren't afraid to blow it, you'll all get along just fine. |

Posts: 79 Michigan | Thanks to all. Good input. I will take a print out of the check list in the owner's manual with me. I also plan to ask them to document the belt tension so that I can compare it later when my Gates tool arrives. |

| What is the Gates tool you order? Is it just the spring tension device? The Harley dealer has those for about $15.

| For sure have them check the belt so you don't wind up with that chirp that we all complain about. There is a maintenance log in your manual get dealer to date it and sign it.
Ask him what little things you can do to keep the bike running right. Work with your dealer and be nice it might just help later on.
It does piss me off that we have to bring the bike back and pay them 300 dollars to make sure the factor built the bike right. They should pay us to make sure the bike is right. |

Posts: 79 Michigan | Nothing exciting to report from the 500 mile maintenance other than a lighter wallet and a fresh filter and oil.
I still have a light ticking sound (like an exhaust header leak) but don't see any exhaust leaks and the exhaust is tight. The dealer was stating it was normal engine noise. Also sounds like light valve noise (clearance between the rocker and valve) but given these are hydraulic I would expect the clearance to be zero.
It isn't getting worse (or better) so I'll just monitor it. I have a 5 year warranty. |

I had an exhaust leak from the factory on my '08 and it took me pulling the pipes to see it and replace the gaskets and clean up the pipes ends from poor casting. Use the Lloyd gaskets, better seal. Dealer wouldn't do anything because the couldn't see anything either. My old gaskets and pipes said otherwise. Also dramically reduced the popping and stall that I was experiencing when I first got it.

Posts: 79 Michigan | Thank you for sharing that varyder. I have been thinking about doing that as well. It is still pretty light so I am going to hold off a bit. I was out yesterday riding with some buddies and left the radio off. Other than that light tick the motor / trans is so sweet sounding. Nice tone but very quiet (which I like). To be honest the tick isn't that bad but would be that much nicer without it.
How hard was it to get the mufflers off? I see in the service manual there is a special tool required to twist them. |
